Computer program for predicting creep behavior of bodies of revolution

    Get PDF
Computer program, CRAB, uses finite-element method to calculate creep behavior and predict steady-state stresses in an arbitrary body of revolution subjected to a time-dependent axisymmetric load. Creep strains follow a time hardening law and a Prandtl-Reuss stress-strain relationship

Reform of Preservice Science Education: An Example from a State-Supported University

    Get PDF
The ongoing movement to reform the teaching and learning of mathematics and science began as an effort targeting grades K-12. This movement, however, also has significant implications for institutions of higher education, especially in the area of teacher preparation. Northeast Louisiana University has utilized an extensive system of support, including vital National Science Foundation funding, to redesign its science curriculum for elementary education majors. Four courses featuring the content areas of biology, chemistry, geosciences, and physics and integrated with respect to content and methodology were collaboratively developed by education and science faculty. and were approved as requirements for all preservice majors. Preliminary evaluation results with respect to students’ content knowledge and attitude are favorable. Ongoing efforts include the development of activities designed to further integrate the courses with respect to content and the execution of focused evaluative studies to reflect the degree of implementation of the reform practices that have been modeled by the university faculty

A Preliminary Assessment of Tidal Flooding along the New Hampshire Coast: Past, Present and Future

    Get PDF
This report presents the results of a preliminary study that examines several critical coastal issues for New Hampshire including sea level fluctuations (past, present and future), shoreline migrations, and tidal flooding. Included are: 1) an analysis of sea level changes over the Holocene and resulting shoreline migrations, 2) an assessment of low-lying areas with elevations below selected tidal flooding datums in coastal areas, and 3) an assessment of increases in low-lying areas that are potentially at risk to tidal flooding over the next century due to sea level rise

Controlling Listeria monocytogenes on ready-to-eat poultry products using carboxymethylcellulose film coatings containing green tea extract (GTE) combined with nisin and malic acid

    Get PDF
The ability to control Listeria monocytogenes on ready-to-eat poultry products using carboxymethyl-cellulose film coatings containing green tea extract (GTE), malic acid (M), nisin (N), and their combinations was evaluated. The antimicrobials (GTE: 1.0%, nisin: 10,000 IU/g, malic acid: 1.0%) were incorporated alone or in combination into a carboxymethyl cellulose film coating. Pre-inoculated, fully cooked chicken pieces (~1g, 1cm x 1cm x 1cm) were coated with the film solution. The coated chicken pieces were stored at 4°C and the inhibitory activity against Listeria monocytogenes was evaluated at 0, 7, 14, 21, and 28 days. The highest inhibitory activity was found in the sample containing GTE, nisin, and malic acid in combination with a reduction of 3.3 log CFU/mL. These data demonstrate that GTE—combined with nisin and malic acid and incorporated into a carboxymethyl-cellulose film coating, multiple-hurdle technology—is effective in inhibiting L. monocytogenes growth on fully cooked chicken pieces at 4°C. Research in the area of finding natural antimicrobials to aid in the prevention of food-borne illnesses is necessary to improve safety and shelf life of products such as ready-to-eat meats. This project provides an effective combination of natural anti-microbials to control L. monocytogenes in ready-to-eat chicken pieces

Optical preparation and measurement of atomic coherence at gigahertz bandwidth

We detail a method for the preparation of atomic coherence in a high density atomic medium, utilising a coherent preparation scheme of gigahertz bandwidth pulses. A numerical simulation of the preparation scheme is developed, and its efficiency in preparing coherent states is found to be close to unity at the entrance to the medium. The coherence is then measured non-invasively with a probe field.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figure
